This Forum is not only a Watercolor Forum or a Forum for Oil Artists. Each artist is welcome, no matter what medium he/she paints.

Everyone is welcome to join in with art and painting images, their step by step painting stages, reference images, comments, advice on how to paint particular subjects, suggestions, discoveries, breakthroughs and to offer nurturing and support to like-minded artists.

My vision is to bring you a resource so every artist can access a reference library of invaluable material to help you all on your artistic journey - no matter which medium you use:  oil, watercolor or any other medium to express what you want to say.

The SusanArt forum has a thriving community of artists who love to offer help, suggestions, remedies and of course hints, tips and information which expand all of our knowledge.

Exciting news! - Painting Challenges!

We are now running Painting Challenges where either I or a guest artist will propose a subject and host the challenge. Sometimes the guest artist may create a step-by-step painting for you.

We will offer help and advice to all no matter what medium you wish to paint in. These challenges will be there for you to reference any time – for as long as the internet is around! So watch the magic unfold!

This will give you all a chance to analyze each others techniques and open discussion on how you each tackled a particular project. You will learn a great deal by watching how other artists interpret a subject.

I plan to spend as much time on the forum as practicable. So you will benefit from my experience and that of other members too. If you have any suggestions – do let us know by posting those suggestions on the SusanArt forum.

The challenge may not necessarily focus on a specific subject – it may be a Master Class on soft blending, or something as simple as keeping edges soft. We may discuss how to determine warm and cool colors and then suggest you may all like to create a little study showing how they work so beautifully in a painting using the methods, hints and tips I have offered. I will pop by to answer the questions that arise. When you have finished something you would like to share or ask advice on – we will all offer our encouragement and help to extend your skills.

Please remember there is no judgment here - just fun, encouragement and constructive help. So post your studies and you will receive nurturing suggestions to help you reach your full potential. What better way to do that than through these challenges where you can all benefit from seeing how we do it!

Current Challenges:

I am often asked how to paint leaves, backgrounds, water (the sea), skies, portraits, eyes, hair, fabric, skin tones, white on white – the list goes on.

For the Initial SusanArt Challenge, we began with two subjects for you to choose from:

How to paint leaves - Hosted by myself

How to paint a portrait of a baby
This subject was hosted by Bruce Johnson (in oil)

I also hosted How to paint a portrait of a baby in watercolor.

This will give you a comparison of mediums and you will also see there are many crossovers that will help you no matter which medium you would like to use.
