DVD: “Painting Watercolor My Way”

– 2 Disc-DVD-Set – over 5 hours of invaluable instruction

Look over Susan’s shoulder as she explains in full detail everything she is doing and why. Susan holds nothing back in teaching you the magic behind her multi-layered transparent watercolor techniques.

Learn how to create beautiful, luminous paintings that glow and create a true sense of presence. Susan’s teaching methods focus on understand why her methods help you to create a three dimensional reality. This awareness will open a vast array of new possibilities and is designed to give you experience, knowledge and courage to experiment with all subjects.

This is Susan’s 3rd DVD which contains all of the latest breakthroughs, inspiration and knowledge she uses to create paintings that speak to the viewers.

In this 2-disc-DVD-set Susan uses a still life subject as a “vehicle” to teach you how to create numerous textures, methods and a vast array of color mixing and techniques.

This DVD is so much more than a demonstration of a still life painting. Watch as she captures the lustre of glossy porcelain, the delicacy of rose petals; the textured, veined surface of leaves and the rich grain of polished wood, a luminous background of jewel-like hues and so much more. But also see how these lessons in painting convincing surfaces and textures can be used to create any subject at all. The secret of Susan’s success is the way she teaches and how she opens your eyes to see and feel the emotion with the way she uses color, light, shadow and texture. Throughout her DVDs Susan shares a multitude of hints and tips that will help you reach your full potential.

Disc One:

Experience the feeling of having a one-on-one workshop with Susan. Her welcome and introduction begin in her own garden. Watch as she selects the perfect rose for the still-life subject.

Enjoy a sneak preview of what is ahead through an initial animation of each of the painting stages. This still life subject is specifically chosen as it covers numerous textures, surfaces, methods, demonstrations of the hints and tips and all of the invaluable breakthroughs Susan has discovered in her painting career. Although beautiful in its own right – the subject is just a ‘vehicle’ to introduce you to the techniques Susan has developed that give her paintings a true sense of presence.

Materials:

Susan has spent years narrowing down the materials she uses.

She has arrived at the perfectly suited and limited number of hues, brushes, tapes, paper and board that make all the difference to the success of her paintings. Susan knows how daunting it feels to be faced with a vast array of products available to artists so she shares this knowledge with you and also explains why they are so well suited to her methods. Watch as Susan demystifies stretching watercolor paper and tells you how to avoid all of the ‘traps for young players’.
And then it’s into the fun part – applying the colors. See how Susan’s trademark ‘map’, created by yellow underwashes, are laid in using her ‘priming method’.
This underwash gives her paintings that magical glow that influences all of the subsequent hues. Watch as she teaches how to create a feeling of substance as her subjects emerge from the paper. The fine veils of transparent color allow her paintings to come alive. Look over her shoulder as she explains in full detail, everything she is doing and why. That is the secret to her teaching and painting. Learn why things work and develop an understanding and knowledge of what happens when you use the methods and techniques Susan shares with you.
This understanding will open a window on a whole new world of possibilities. You will see and hear as Susan deliberates each move, so you can understand her thought processes and know the reasons for her decisions. Watch as she mixes the numerous perfect color combinations and learn how she creates color trails which allow her paintings to sing with fresh clean glowing hues. See how Susan can mix virtually any color from her limited palette. A new feature of this DVD set are the short ‘Garden Breaks’ where Susan gives you a chance to pause between each painting stage as she highlights the beauty of a particular flower or fruit in her garden.
On Disc Two Susan continues to bring her painting to life. She retains the white background until near the end. Many artists have asked her about painting ‘white on white’ and the decorated white porcelain bowl provides an excellent example of this.

She discusses backgrounds and the different options for the painting subject of the DVD, then shows each stage of building up a background incorporating the colors and wood-grain elements of her reference photograph. Backgrounds often cause concern for artists so watch as Susan shows you how to take control of your background hues so you too, can create a luminous transparent background that perfectly complements so many subjects.
Fine-tuning is the ‘icing on the cake’. In this stage you will see how Susan brings everything together. This stage shows you how to refine your painting. This all-important stage is when all the components of the painting are integrated to form a polished and satisfying ‘whole’.
Then enjoy a ‘Gallery’ of Susan’s work in both watercolor and oil, with fine detail highlighted and each painting shown unframed, then framed. The ‘Footnotes’ section provides you with much useful and practical information. Enjoy over 5 hours of Susan’s invaluable information and tuition, including insights into her thought processes as she guides you to a new level of expertise no matter what skill level you are at.

Gina “I have just received Susans DVD`s and LOVE them. I am so jealous as there is no way I will ever make one of those seminars. The dvd`s have taught me a lot and I am thrilled with them. I will be watching them many times over. Susan Thanks”

Maylon “I, too, attended the Oregon seminar in July 2009. I can’t find the words to say how much I enjoyed it and learned. I am a new artist and the only teaching was one class in Jr. College. There I was introduced to Susan’s DVD One-on-One Watercolor Workshops DVD by a fellow student. That was when I fell in love with watercolor. ”

Mati ”My loving husband gave to me as a gift, a book created by you, filled with the most beautiful flowers. I’d not seen watercolor paintings so vibrant before. It was inspirational. I had been taking water color classes from the local colleges. Once seeing your techniques in the book, I wanted your DVD…and got it.My instructor has told me that I have now surpassed him and the rest of the class. I showed him and the class your book and let them know of your DVDs. I recently taught the class as part of my class project. Everyone thanked me, including the instructor. Thank you for your grace and instruction in painting. I have fallen in love with the water color medium: hydrodynamics, paper types, and delight of pigments and light. I look forward to your next books and DVDs. Several students in the class have purchased your book and DVDs now.An update: By the way, you would be proud of the great advances made by several students in my water color class since purchasing your book and DVDs. It’s like sunlight found it’s way to their paper (no more muddy paintings). All in the class who have purchased your water color instructional materials, have improved technique and understanding of the water color medium. They express less frustration and seem to have once again found wonderment in painting. Their new found confidence lends itself to freedom of expression. Think of it…you gave this thoughtful gift to others by sharing your knowledge of water color technique. Wouldn’t it be nice if confidence could be so easily packaged for everyday life? I am doing my best to afford myself a gift: a reserved space in your water color workshop in Maine (one of my favorite states). I must save up the pennies for that one. I sent an email to Gail asking for the price of the workshop and await a reply.”

“The power of a composition and good reference material cannot be underrated. I always say you can be the best painter in the world – but if your composition (and reference material) is lacking – nothing can lift that painting beyond a well ‘painted’ study. What we want to achieve are paintings that say so much more than that”.

The Susan Harrison-Tustain reference photograph e-album could be the answer you are looking for.

The security coded e-album of photographs is designed to help you chose your subjects from an array of reference photographs featuring florals, still life, street scenes, figurative, bird studies as well as miscellaneous subject matter. No matter what your preference, we are sure you will find inspiration here. Additional images will be added to the album from time to time to keep your inspiration flowing!

Susan has put together an e-album of awesome reference images for your use. This is a free, bonus, easily down-loadable gift with the purchase of any Susan Harrison-Tustain DVDs.

You may like to use parts of images to create your own composition. We feel this is the ideal gift for the artist who just wants to have their brushes flying without having to first search for the ideal subject matter.

These images are taken by Susan or Richard Harrison-Tustain. They are royalty-free as well as copyright free – and available only to those who purchase Susan’s DVDs from her website.

Please note it is advisable not to use other people’s reference images if you plan to enter a competition with the painting. Almost all competitions exclude the use of such images. Unless of course, you have changed the composition substantially.

“These images are for your pleasure and to help you move forward with your painting. Richard and I hope they bring you, your family and friends as well as patrons inspiration and joy from your finished paintings! Have fun! Susan”

YES, great news! After many requests to have downloadable versions of Susan’s four 2-disc DVD titles we now have those available, so you can play them on your iPad, Android device, laptop, netbook or desktop computer. Of course, one of the best features of a DVD is the chapter menu and the navigation option for easily playing any section you wish. The video platform we have chosen allows this function. It’s called Platform Purple.

To purchase and play the downloadable DVDs the first step is to visit Susan’s DVD download shop (click HERE). Once you have purchased a DVD download and signed up to Platform Purple you are ready to begin watching and learning from Susan’s teaching on any of your devices.

Please note:

  • There are 2 great options for viewing:

           1. If you have a reasonably fast internet connection (such as found in most of North America and Europe for example) it is possible to watch the DVD video you have purchased by ‘streaming’. You can do this in your browser (e.g. Firefox, Chrome, Internet Explorer, Safari) by clicking HERE. Then login with your email address and password.

           2. If your internet connection is slower, and also if you wish to watch the DVDs offline you are best to ‘download’ the files to your computer or portable device to watch them at your leisure on the free ‘Purple Player’. The player is available for Windows or Mac desktop computers, laptops and netbooks and for Android or iOS hand-held mobile devices (such as Samsung or iPad tablets and ‘phones). Once you own the DVD download you can play it on any of these devices you have (with the correct version of the player installed for the device). Just go to your ‘My Library’ page (click HERE) and login using the email address and password you registered with. There you will find the download(s) you have purchased and the icons for all the devices for accessing your download. The files for the 4 DVDs are about 1.5 to 2 Gb each

  • I mentioned above that one of the great features of our downloads via Platform Purple is that the menu and navigation functions found on the DVD discs are retained. In the player window just click on the word ‘Chapters’. A list of all the chapters opens up so you can easily click on the one you wish to play.
  • Another resource you will find useful are the reference images relating to the download. You can find those in pdf format if you click on the ‘Additional Media’ button, or ‘Attachments’
  • There are also the options to alter the video playing speed and to loop a section of video so you can see it several times. In the browser playing window just click on the ‘advanced controls’ Or in the ‘Purple Player’ window click on the little toothed wheel (bottom right). When moused over it says ‘Settings’.
  • For any questions you have or information you may require about the downloads ‘Platform Purple’ has a very good ‘Help Center’ and ‘Customer Support’ service – click HERE to access it.
  • The price of the DVD downloads is in US$ and is the same as the price of a physical DVD set, but with NO added shipping cost. With downloads we obviously incur no DVD disc production costs, but there is a cost to have the DVD downloads hosted and available for purchase. This cost is, in fact, higher than the cost of physical discs + shipping. For a very reasonable price the downloads provide great convenience and practicality for viewing of Susan’s DVDs, especially on the portable devices that are becoming ever more popular.
