A Demonstration - Delicate Petals

0bservation is the key to the successful rendering of your subject. Notice how the petals gently fold and turn, creating luminous shadows and soft highlights with few hard edges. The use of warm against cool hues molds the form, and cast, shadows give its depth. When painting gentle forms such as these, keep in mind the essence of the flower: the graceful fall of the petals, the soft interplay of light and shadow. I sometimes write down the key words that describe the essence of a subject I'm about to paint. I then occasionally refer to those words to ensure I'm keeping on track.

demo-1 1.  Lay In Washes:
Prime the paper, then lay in a watery wash of Winsor & Newton Naples Yellow in the yellow areas. Let dry. The pinkish hues can be painted in the same manner with a mix of Schmincke Naples Yellow-Reddish, a touch of Winsor & Newton Naples Yellow and Alizarin Crimson. The deeper yellow areas are fine washes of Maimeriblu Primary Yellow. Slowly build up your washes to the desired depth of hue.
