Hi Marylka,

No, I still haven't got a light. Sorry not to have answered sooner but I am still finding it difficult to get back to where I want to be on the Forum. I was just looking to see if Susan had answered my letter about her suggested paints that Schmincke were putting her name on and whether they were doing the collection in tubes as well as pans. I can't find an answer from her but wonder if I am just not looking in the right place.
 Best Wishes Mary.

Hi Marylka,
Thank you once again for your help. Looked again today for the light for the box but could only find soft warm light bulbs in the shop I visited. I will still keep looking.

Hi Mary
You could try the soft warm light it will work better at night as the daylight will not fade the outline of the ref pic as much.

Hi Marylka,
You are full of helpful information, Thank you. I think I will still try for the cool light though. I don't usually get involved with painting at night.

Hi Donna,
Just been reading some of the earlier Posts and saw that you live in Toronto. You said you had a job to get the Schmincke paints in Canada. By now you may know this but I have just had a leaflet from "Paint spot" here in Canada, they sell Schmincke paints.
WWW.paintspot.ca      info@paintspot.ca    Telephone 1 800 363 0546

Thought this might be of help.

Hi Susan,
I was reading, in one of your letters, that you didn't use "Ultramarine Finest"  anymore because of the grainy effect it created, so I was surprised to see that the new paint set at Schmincke had it in, also the "Ruby Red" which you didn't have in the last letter I read that said you now only use 10 colours. I just wanted to clarify because I am thinking I would like to try your Palette at some stage.

I am such an admirer of your work and I am hoping that some of my family will club together to buy me you latest DVD for my Birthday in May.
Best Wishes Mary.

Hi Marylka,
I believe I read somewhere that you had purchased Susan's latest DVD of the Rose and Bowl. Do you know if it was painted with her Palette of the 10 colours she recommended?
I tried my light box for the first time yesterday and it worked fine but did still get quite hot so I unpluged it half way through and let it cool down again. I will try a darker pencil or even a pen to trace my pictures in future, I think that would help me see the drawing through the w/c paper even better.

Mary.

I can answer part of this question. The new color palette IS recommended in the DVD.
I went to the workshop for the Rose and Bowl. She used her 1st magical color palette in her original painting of the Rose & Bowl.   She painted it prior to the workshop. By the time we were getting set for her workshop, she was considering some other colors to use on this painting and to add to her palette.

The list of Materials for us to use was her Magical Palette, plus, Daniel Smith sap green, W&N permanent rose, and Ultramarine finest, for the little blue flowers on the bowel or we could mix to get a warmer blue by adding a bit of red to Phthalo blue. So by then, she was already reconsidering Ultramarine finest for little needed jobs.
Since she was looking for a PV 19 "a nice warm pink" to replace W&N permanent rose(PV19), she found that with Schminke's Ruby Red. Its not really a RUBY red but a beautiful warm pink. It's perfect for her palette. Now she has a nice warm pink with a really cool pink. A nice warm blue with her cooler blue, but limits the use of the warmer blue.

She loved the hue of Daniel Smith Sap green but found she can make a beautiful green with Schminke Sap Green with a touch of Translucent Orange. Now Schminke Sap Green is on her Palette too.
Traditionally a palette set usually consists of 12 colors anyway so this happened just in time for her signature set.
Blessings,
Renee

Renee explained the palette perfectly
With the light box I suggested in an earlier post that in the evening/dark room the transfer is easier to read the lines. What you suggested would work as well ,Even though the globe gets hot i don't think it would cause any damage it is good to be aware though. It's when its left on when not in use that over heating could be an issue.

Hi Renee and Marylka,
Thank you both for your answers. I have sent the list of Susan's Palette to my daughter because she and my son wanted to get me something for an up coming Birthday. I like the idea of a small Palette as I don't find it easy to know what to put together to make various colours, I have 32 W/N colours but like Susan said, a limited Palette helps you get used to what mixes well with what. We can get the Schminke Paints at "Paint Spot" in Canada so they will work out quite a bit cheaper as individual tubes without the container. For anyone wanting the # it is 1-800-363-0546 the business is in Edmonton, so for me, living the other side of Canada, there is a 3 hour time difference.
How lucky for you Renee to have been on one of Susan's work shops, I think I also read, somewhere, that you Marylka had also been to one of her Workshops, you must have learned so much as you both do lovely work.

So glad of all the Information. Best Wishes, Mary.

Yes, I really was overcome when I learned she was giving a workshop in my home State, and right in a City I was accustomed to. I would not have missed it for the world and was worth the cost.
The work shop was a 5 day (all day) workshop.

Hello Susan...

You mentioned that Thalo Green & Translucent Orange make a luscious Sap Green but I get a greyed green that is definitely not 'luscious'.  :-)

I am using Schminke's Translucent Orange but have a different brand of Thalo Green (Michael Wilcox).  Perhaps the problem is with the Thalo Green I have but as the mix contains red ( in the Translucent Orange) wouldn't this automatically make the resulting mix greyish?

BTW I love your art and have all your videos!

Cheers, Diane

I hope you do not mind my input, but what pigment is in that Phthalo green you are using?
There are 2 kinds of Phthalo green. One is PG7 which is a Phthalo green Blue shade and there is a Phthalo green PG36 which is a Phthalo green yellow shade.
The Schminke Phthalo green that Susan uses is a PG7.
Sap green is a green with a touch of red in it to make it more natural like the greens in nature. The red being the compliment of green will tone down the bright unnatural look of the Phthalo green and that is what you want. The two colors true red and true green mixed evenly together actually make more of a brown look in stead of gray.

Hope this helps.

Hi Diane - not to be presumptious but I think Susan mentioned that it was the Schimcke sap green mixed with translucent orange that made an even better sap green
