My new book by Harley came today!  Grin I know I'll love it! I am also reading a really old one my deceased mother in law had, by Pastel artist Leslie B. De Mille. I don't know if he is still even living or not. I was reading it while I waited for Harely's book.

Awesome , way to go Marylka, you're brave alright..  Smiley

Renee, you'll love Harley's book, it used to be my bible when I first got started in pastel. I've developed my own style somewhat now, but I still refer back now and then

Undecided Now I have to figure out if I read or paint 1st! UGH! I think I'll read some 1st. I have allot of reading to catch up on, but I want to paint more. There are so many subjects I want to paint before my life is over. I feel sometimes that my chances in time for these subjects is slipping away.
I'm going to a car show this weekend and want to get some good OLD car photos. I would love to paint some old classic automobiles. Grin Better get started on my book!

Hi Bruce,
After doing the other challenges I have more confidence in starting a painting .This is just the first wash of color in Aureolin then I made a mix of Thalo blue, Alizarin crimson and tiny touch of aureolin for the eye's I will start on some indian yellow for the warmer areas on the face.I was thinking of using UMB but decided that they eye's were more grey /blue . I do need to clean and straighten edges I will do that before applying more washes and start measuring .What do you think?

Hi Marylka

Great start, its hard to tell but I would tend a bit more to indigo. Do a few tests on some scrap paper to get the right hue. Drawing is very good

Thanks Susan and Bruce - I do agree the eyes are the most challenging to paint it seems the most MINUTE detail changes the look of the eye plus also I feel most people (Including myself) tend to paint the eyes bigger than they really are.  I am so looking forward to this challenge

I think Harley is one of the two best pastel portraitists living. Daniel Greene would be the other ..
Bruce, I am LOVING this book you recommended! Not only is he a wonderful writer, he knows the pencil measuring tricks!
I was shown some of these pencil measurements when I was 8 years old by a professional drawer who was the father of (my aunt) the young woman my Uncle married. He saw me drawing people on a piece of scrap paper and said, "Oh! I see you are an artist!" I can draw too! Would you like to see the pencil tricks I use that makes it easier? I of course said, Yes even though I rarely talked because I was so shy.

So, he showed me the pencil tricks, as he called  it. How to tilt the head and angle it. Making the head and eyes look like they are looking in different directions.  Getting proportions correct. As a child, calling them pencil tricks made sense to me. LOL!
I was only able to absorb some of it but what I did I went crazy with it. My school tablet was full of nothing but drawn people instead of my school work. Much to the dismay of my teacher.

This book helped bring most of these vague memories back. It helped me see how and why I could draw people well. I almost forgot why! I could never use graphs because after being so used to using simply a pencil, it just confused me to much. My pencil worked fine. Simple measurements without all the complicated numbers and mathematics.  I was unconsciously using some of these methods already. Always looking at my pencil and tilting it and measuring with it with my finger. Seeing past the pencil to the paper. Some things I almost forgot so thanks so much for recommending this book. Those memory's were rushing back!

What a wonderful way with words Harley has! Cheesy And I have only just begun to get through this book. I still have allot to read and learn.  Wink

There are a few technical faults which I have left in for you as  learning exercises.. Can anyone identify the mistakes/ommissions.
