Susan my apologies, I didn't realize you had critiqued Imogene for me.  Thank you so much.  She was a tough one for me because I had to reach ....really reach to try and equal or at least come close to my friend Bruce's painting.

She is the best I have ever done so far and the lessons will carry over to other paintings in the future

Thank you for your suggestions,  I have printed them off and shall do as you suggested when I get a little more time.
I appreciate the time you took to go over her so carefully  Grin

Hereis my drawing for the Imogene watercolor portrait , I also am nervous to show my drawing . I really don't want to begin the painting yet as I am still not pleased with this drawing . Could someone help me . The right eye doesn't look right and the overall face looks too large . It is so difficult to get a likeness . I am not sure if the angle is correct . Would really appreciate some constructive critique . Thanks .

I'm working on the eyes not yet finished. My concern is my ref photo is quite different to when I have the photo on my computer screen, the eyes are more grey/blue than the ref pic, which shows more blue/ grey to me they may be too blue. I also have started on some skin color. In real life it's not as blue as this post.

My thought is do I go with the ref pic or the computer image.Susan you will know if the color of the eyes is close.
If they are not my solution would be to color match the computer image using the hole punch and comparing the color that i will paint around the hole for this purpose.I have lifted some color so that if I need to adjust I can still do it.I will paint in the iris and highlight that may help with some direction.I will paint the shadow of the lid when the right color is determined and the dark circle around the eyes.

Hi Kathy the cheek area on the left is not quite right with the eyes it would help if you measured these against the ref Why not place the ref photo under your drawing up against a window and see where the adjustments need to be made.

Hi Marlyka, Thanks so much I find this portrait quite challenging . I will try what you have suggested . I can't seem to be objective  as I've been staring at it for too long .It really helps to get your input . I saw your beginnings with the yellow wash but it doesn't show up very well on my computer . Looking forward to seeing how yours is going . I will be away for three days , Monday till Thursday but will get back to this when I am back . I do find it difficult to keep up with all the things on this forum . You are really good at keeping up with ll the threads .Bye for now  , Thanks again for your comments .Kathy B.

HI Kathy
Just quickly here as I am about to head out the door

Firstly - well done! Very well done!

The eyes look a little too close together. It is difficult to see - but have you given her the puppy double chin that is in the photograph?

Your shading under the mouth - on the chin is a little dark so it throws the drawing out a little. Soften that and I think it should be fine.

Im am sure we have some other wonderful drawers out there who can offer help as I have to run!

Susan

Hi Kathy

Don't change the chin - I was wondering if you had drawn it in as it was hard to see. It needs to be there.  In the dulled light I couldnt see it.

Keep up the lovely work

Your values are looking great. You have rendered the nose and mouth so very well. Enjoying the progress.

Thanks Glenda these eye have been a challenge as to decide whether to go with the ref pic or the computer image they are quite different I hope Susan can shed some light although I think I have solved the issue.I'm quite happy with the result I have been going for ages on just the eyes Cheesy I have done so much measuring I have under painted in yellow before, but I believe never to this level Susan's latest DVD has cemented in my mind the value in taking the time to paint the map with a series of  yellow values .Previously I basically laid in a yellow under painting a big difference.I have my sons measuring tool this made a huge difference with the eyes as the paint was applied no matter how carefully i laid it on there was a small line being covered over, i have measured and adjust every wash so that I wouldn't get to far out with the eye shape it happens so easily.I'm sharing these thoughts with you as you are starting again and it may be of some use.
 Hopefully more accurate colors.

Dear Marylka,
Imogene's eyes look luminous. You are doing a wonderful job. When you add the flesh colors, the painting will really pop. I am glad things are going so well for you.

Keep moving forward,

Hi Susan ,
I am glad you told me about the puppy chin because I thought it was so adorable I hated to change it . I had just put the drawing down but I am able to change it very easily .I am excited to begin . Thanks again for your advise . Kathy B.
